As Americans sit down to their Thanksgiving feasts, a Gazan family gives thanks for a few delicious morsels.
I live in Türkiye and for the past 5 weeks have been in anxious communication with my family. They were displaced from our home in Sheikh Radwan and are sheltering precariously on the grounds of a hospital in Khan Younis.
Today they reported that for three consecutive days, their meals consisted solely of bread with ketchup, za’atar, and cheese, accompanied by tea. Occasionally, the meal has included cucumber and tomatoes.
My sister shared some photos.

A line to get some hot peanuts. They were very expensive.

Tea made from rain water.

Falafel for the first time in 46 days! Also very expensive.
She texted me, “We were fortunate to have this, considering others had nothing. If, Inshallah, we survive this, I look forward to enjoying maqluba, stuffed grape leaves, and shawarma. And pizza. Sleep well and savor a comforting hot bath.”
