Ambient Gaza is rebuilding Gaza in sound, through testimony, soundscapes, and music, to raise urgent support for Palestinians.
“Sound as Solidarity, Listening as Resistance” is the motto of Ambient Gaza, a new project that weaves together music with an interactive audio map for Gaza. The project launched recently with geographical descriptions contributed by several Gazans including WANN writers.
The Gaza soundmapping project centers the voices and lived experiences of Gazans through firsthand testimony. It features interviews that document daily life, memories, and resilience in the face of genocide. The aim is to counter sonic narratives rooted in power and dehumanization, honoring instead the relational act of listening: to the land, to the stories embedded in sonic memory, to resistance, and to the communities in Palestine enduring ongoing dispossession.
Part of the sound map includes music contributed by artists who remain anonymous—an intentional choice to prioritize listening over individual recognition. These pieces are interwoven with sound recordings from Gaza prior to the current wave of destruction.
As noted at the Ambient Gaza website, “From marketplaces and olive harvests to beachside play, each piece captures fragments of everyday life—offering a space to listen, to grieve, and to stand with those still living and dreaming in Palestine.
“The music, soundscapes and oral testimony are an act of non-erasure: a refusal to forget, a recognition of Palestinian humanity. It invites listeners to carry these sounds within their bodies—until they can once again resonate in the places and lives from which they came.”
Unless requesting otherwise, contributors are also anonymized for their security.
Ambient Gaza’s first album is available at the website and available for purchase from Bandcamp. Proceeds go to humanitarian organizations including UNICEF Gaza Emergency Appeal, British Red Cross/Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS), Oday Halawa Fund, Project Pure Hope, United4Gaza, All Our Relations, Ghosoon Al-Khair, and Sumud Educational Hub.
Ambient Gaza is actively seeking soundscapes of Gaza pre-destruction and testimony from Gazans in Gaza, displaced, and in the diaspora. The Collective also invites contributions from new artists for the upcoming Ambient Gaza Album, Vol. 2. Prospective contributors can email the Collective.
