Summer doldrums

I hoped summer might skip Gaza this year.

Today in Gaza it is 40 degees C (104 F).

Dear summer:
I am sorry
for feeling happy
when I heard a rumor
you wouldn’t come this year.

I know how hard
it is to feel
unwelcome and
neglected.
I experience that too.

But understand me:
Electricity is scarce
and I have no money
to run the generator
for air conditioning
or even a fan.

And now you’ve come to us
like a dark horse.

Please forgive me;
don’t suffocate me
with your sultry presence.
