“We the Palestinians have been suffering at the hands of the Israelis for the past 74 years and to some extent we are used to the suffering,” says Ahmed Alnouq in a June 15 interview for the online show Palestine Deep Dive. “But what we are not used to is seeing the Western media deliberately and systematically silencing the Palestinians, depriving them of agency, neglecting their stories, and not shedding light on their suffering.”

In the hour-long conversation, Ahmed and host Mark Seddon discussed the journalistic double standards of major Western outlets in their coverage of Palestine. They touch on a variety of events for which reporting has been biased or absent altogether, from the Great March of Return to the settler violence in East Jerusalem and the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh by Israeli Forces.

The irony behind the dearth of balanced coverage is that Palestine is a “fertile a place for journalists,” Ahmed says. “We have a story in every single house. If you walk in the street, everyone you might encounter everyone has a personal story that deserves to be told.”

Ahmed’s personal story was the inspiration behind the creation of We Are Not Numbers in 2014. Today he serves on WANN’s management committee. He lives in London and is outreach and advocacy officer at the human rights organization, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor.

“We as Palestinians ask the international media to be just and to tell the truth as it is,” says Ahmed. By not reporting on Israeli war crimes, “they are complicit in these crimes.” He encourages journalists to “not be cowards” and to “be brave enough to tell the truth.”
