Mary E Miller

Mary E Miller, RN, MN, is an occupational health nurse who received a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Washington’s Family Nurse Practitioner Program and specialized in Occupational & Environmental Health. She has worked in a variety of capacities in the area of occupational health and safety including as a clinician and researcher the University of Washington’s Occupational Medicine Program; later she was involved in research, policy, outreach, and education and enforcement assistance to protect workers, at the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries. Her major career focus was child labor policy and protecting young workers, and she has many publications on these issues. She feels strongly about public health prevention and access healthcare services for all.

She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in public health (2017-2018) and was based at the University of Cape Town’s School of Public Health in South Africa as a visiting faculty member. Her work there focused on occupational health and safety curriculum development and training for health workers in the public sector, raising awareness about the impact of the climate crisis on health, and lecturing and mentoring graduate students. At the end of her tenure there, she was awarded the role of honorary senior lecturer for her contributions. She is mostly retired and volunteers in her community when possible.  She also mentors students during their graduate studies at the University of Cape Town and is actively involved in public health policy issues in her professional organization.
