Laila Sumpton is a poet of Indian and British heritage who grew up in London. She has always loved writing poetry, and after studying English literature at university she set out to find a way to write poetry not just as a hobby, but as her work. She has been working as a poet for four years now; she is asked to write poems for different organizations and to organize and deliver poetry performances and workshops at theaters, museums, historic buildings, universities, hospitals and schools. She is currently working on publishing her first pamphlet and is co-directing a group of refugee and migrant poets called Bards Without Borders. A lot of her poetry explores identity, memory and human rights issues. She sometimes uses form, but mostly writes in free verse and is beginning to write short stories. She also helps young people edit and prepare speeches and blog posts on child rights issues, since she works with children’s charity Plan International UK.
