Deborah Root has written widely in cultural politics and the arts, and has taught in Canadian and international universities. Her interests include the politics of representation in art and popular culture, with a focus on colonial histories and the construction of racialized discourse. Her book, Cannibal Culture, explores a range of issues in cultural politics—including Western orientalism—and in 2017 was included on a Buzzfeed list of the 16 books to read to understand white supremacy in the United States.
Deborah also has served on the boards of Toronto-based art/politics magazines. She believes it is important to encourage writers to find their own voices, and to write about the things that matter most to them. She sees her role as that of a guide, and enjoys working closely with writers to help them achieve their goals. Deborah has lived in many countries, and continues to enjoy travel, along with world music and cinema, and playing with her four parrots. She currently lives outside of Toronto, where she’s recently taken up painting. She had her first art show in 2017.
