Deborah Root has written widely on cultural politics and the arts, and has taught in Canadian and international universities. Her interests include the politics of representation in art and popular culture, with a focus on colonial histories. She has also served on the boards of Toronto-based art/politics magazines. Her book, Cannibal Culture, explores a range of issues in cultural politics—including Western orientalism—and in 2017 was included on a Buzzfeed list of the 16 books to read to understand white supremacy in the United States.
She believes it is important to encourage writers to find their own voices, and to write about the things that matter most to them. She sees her role as that of a guide, and enjoys working closely with writers to help them achieve their goals. Deborah has lived in many countries, and continues to enjoy travel, along with world music and cinema, and playing with her four parrots. She currently lives outside of Toronto, where she paints and continues to write on the issues of the day.
