Anita Barrow

    Anita Barrows is a poet, novelist, and translator from French, Italian, and German. She has had many volumes of poetry published, the four most recent (and a fifth to appear in 2025) from Kelsay Books. Her novel, The Language of Birds, was published in 2022. Her translations, with Joanna Macy, of the work of Rainer Maria Rilke have been widely used by authors and composers. Anita has taught writing in various settings, including Naropa Institute West and U.C. Berkeley Extension and, for many years, with the Poets in the Schools Program.

    Anita has a Ph.D. in psychology and has taught at The Wright Institute, a psychology doctoral program, since 1987. She also has a clinical practice where she works primarily with children and adolescents and specializes in the treatment of trauma and neurodevelopmental disabilities. For five summers (2005-2009) she worked with staff at the Palestinian Counseling Center, Ramallah, consulting on the intersection between chronic trauma and developmental issues.
