emerging writers from Palestine tell their stories and advocate for their human rights

Is there hope?

Images like this one are seared into my brain.

Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian woman who approached … the Qalandiya checkpoint .… Video of the incident circulating online showed Israeli security personnel opening fire on the woman at close range. Witnesses told local media the unidentified woman was left bleeding at the side of the road for "a long time" before being transported to a hospital in Jerusalem, where she was pronounced dead. I woke up at 5 a.m.
and couldn’t sleep.
I listened to Fairouz:
Fi amal? she asked.
Is there hope?
I sighed.
Is there hope? she asked once again,
and I wept.

Oh, my occupier,
if you make me leave
I will sleep beside an olive tree.
If you push me to tears
I will laugh at you.

Fi amal?
Nothing more to lose, people say.
We have lost so much, even our hope.

Oh, my occupier,
when you kill me
don't forget to steal what is in my pocket.
There you will find humanity, justice and conscience.
Don't throw them away.
Take them,
practice them.
Let my people find some hope.
