Live! A poetry duet

Hanin Alyan Elholy | 20-03-2018

In celebrating World Poetry Day, March 21, UNESCO recognizes the unique ability of poetry to capture the creative spirit of the human mind. Here, two of our storytellers create a poetry "duet."

Mohammed Moussa

I don't want to grow up.
I want to stay a child,
meandering through the streets
merely to wander,
busy with simple dreams.

Hanin Elholy

Grow up, friend.
cultivate happiness.
Dream big and dare to fail.
I see a child in your laughter,
as your cheeks rise,
your eyes squint.
Your heart dances
in every syllable of your poetry.

Mohammed

I hide behind my innocence
where no one can see me.
I keep my bitter love hidden,
away from fear and grief.

Hanin

Let your innocence shine.
Let that sun evaporate the swamp
of fear in which you live,
then plant your heart
with the seeds of love.

Mohammed

This world is fearful, Hanin!
Let me play and dream of flying.

Hanin

Play a dangerous game
and win, Mohammed.
Dream, fail, dream again.
Fly, fall, fly again
and keep flying.
