Vermonters in more than 20 communities honored Gaza by reading from an essay by a young writer who has lost his home and family farm. The statewide event was held on July 24, 2024, as a counterprotest to the address by Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netenyahu, to the U.S. Congress.

Vermonters read excerpts from the essay by Yusuf El-Mobayed, My house has been bombed four times, but it is still home. The full essay was published July 8 at the website of We Are Not Numbers, a Palestinian-led organization through which young writers tell the stories behind the numbers in the news and advocate for their human rights.

Yusuf was also reached in Gaza to read the close of his essay; all the readings were filmed and incorporated into a video, Vermonters Read for Gaza.

Wendy Goldsmith mentored Yusuf on the essay, which was his first for We Are Not Numbers. Kate Casa, another WANN mentor, helped organize the event.
