we are not numbers

emerging writers from Palestine tell their stories and advocate for their human rights

Since childhood, Sara Serria has wished not to be a number but rather, a valuable addition to her homeland. Her name means happiness and cheerfulness, and true to her name, her presence inspires joy wherever she goes.

She is currently a university student on the verge of graduation, studying English translation at the Islamic University of Gaza. Her professional ambition is to take up translating literary works and poems at a U.S.-based publishing firm, and to continue writing journalistic articles.

Living in Gaza, Sara’s heart remains connected to her roots, even though she had to move south due to displacement. Her ancestral village is in the district of Haifa, which she dreams of seeing one day.

When Sara holds a pen, her soul feels liberated. Expressing her thoughts and emotions freely has grown her passion for writing. In whichever literary field she is found, the reader is consumed by her signature—a writer whose free pen, like many before her, raises and honors its story and creator.
