we are not numbers

emerging writers from Palestine tell their stories and advocate for their human rights

Hanan Abukmail

Hanan Abukmail is a medical doctor and a researcher in Gaza City as well as a global shaper at Global Shapers Community- Gaza Hub. Being a three-war survivor in Occupied Palestine, and dealing day-to-day with patients, has taught her the real meaning of empathy,  that is, maintain the lofty ideal to always treat people with kindness.

“I admit that life in Gaza has not given me what I asked for,” she says. “However, it has given me the people, the places, and the situations that allow me to receive even more. I hope that my writing and being a physician-scientist can be a way to give back to our Mother Palestine. Here, giving back is duty, not charity.
