we are not numbers

emerging writers from Palestine tell their stories and advocate for their human rights

Basma Abu Fanunah

Basma, 23, lives in Gaza City's eastern Al-Shujaiea neighborhood and is new graduate in English literature from the Islamic University of Gaza. She also has worked as a freelance translator for organizations such as the Center for Political and Development Studies and the Ministry of Culture.

Basma is fascinated by history and cultures and is planning a project that would help non-Palestinians learn more about that aspect of Gaza, beyond the politics. She will produce a video tour or the historical artifacts in Gaza and introduce its ancient history. Basma also loves literature, seeing it as  "the people who went before us, tapping out messages from the past, from beyond the grave, trying to tell us about life and death." She also loves fashion, design and — of course — writing!

    my work

The best education possible is the goal of most Gaza youth, but sometimes many barriers are encountered along the way.
My name is Adel and this is my story, one of a million such stories from Gaza.
My brother Adel left Gaza to find freedom. This is the second chapter of his story, which takes him to Greece.
My brother, the hope of our family, flew away and made his way to a new future; he needed a life where he is respected and can thrive.
