Angels cry too

When I hear another child has been killed, I imagine angels.

Between May 3 and 5, Israeli soldiers killed three children, ages 4 months, 14 months and 12, and two who were yet to be born. In my heart, I know each was met by an angel.

When the child died,
two angels descended
to the earth,
ready to carry her little body
to God, sitting in heaven.

They see blood and rubble
and the body of a mother
holding her infant child.
They can hardly breathe,
overcome with the smell
of burning flesh.

They lift the child into their arms,
fearful of causing more harm,
trying to avoid another bomb.

They find their cheeks
streaking with tears
as they soar away.
Even the hearts of angels
can break.
